FIREWIRE SURFBOARDS

It's well known that Firewire have pushed the envelope in surfboard contruction over the past 5/6 years, their use of EPS core with Balsa rails have allowed surfers to have the feel of a traditionally built board but with added strength. The balsa deck and carbon rods found in the Rapidfire construction give you a flex normally only seen in lightly glassed standard surfboards, it's the use of it's flex memory with a rapid response that allows for driving turns and unmatched down-the-line speed.

Welcome to Firewire Surfboards; welcome to the future! Founded in 2006 by legendary Australian shaper Nev Hyman, Firewire Surfboards were the first major high-performance surfboard manufacturer to utilize 100% EPS/Epoxy construction. In addition to producing roughly 50 times less Volatile Organic Compounds than your traditional Polyurethane surfboard, EPS/Epoxy boards are also considerably more durable, meaning their environmental friendliness is further enhanced through longevity.

Where once there was a question mark over the inherent flex properties of boards made with EPS foam, Firewire Surfboards' utilisation of ingenious innovations such as parabolic stringers, 'Springer HD' and vacuum sandwich construcion has arguably taken them to another level of performance.

Firewire Surboards are truly pushing the boundaries of surfboard construction. If you haven't already, why not join the ever-increasing army of surfers who want their surfboard to perform amazingly and stay alive for longer - while causing much less harm to the environment.

About Firewire Surfboards

An oft' heard but frankly inaccurate criticism of Firewire surfboards is that their flex-pattern isn’t as conducive to high-performance surfing as those made using more traditional construction methods. Sure, this might hold sway when applied to a run of the mill EPS/epoxy surfboard. But Firewire surfboards are a different kind of beast entirely…

EPS blanks (as opposed to PU) are the future because they’re lighter, stronger and more environmentally friendly (and what’s more, off-cuts can be recycled). Epoxy resin is the future because it’s stronger and unlike Polyester emits only a negligible amount of volatile organic compounds.

But where EPS blanks fall short however is flex; a surfboard has to flex just so to deliver the ideal combination of stiffness/drive and flex/response. EPS blanks are a fair bit stiffer than the traditionally used PU blanks, which utilise a balsa wood stringer running down the middle of the board to instill the required strength/stiffness. From day one Firewire Surfboards recognised that a balsa-wood stringer in an EPS blank would add too much stiffness, while simply removing it would result in a surfboard that’s too fragile.

Firewire Surfboards have got around this conundrum with increasingly ingenious ways of optimising the flex pattern of surfboards made with EPS blanks.

Rapidfire, FST (Future Shapes Technology) and TimberTek represent the evolution of Firewire’s utilisation of ‘Parabolic’ stringers (stringers which run around the outside of the planshape), which add the required strength while providing a kind of flex that’s that's as good as if not better than that of a traditional PU/Polyester surfboard. And their new LFT (Linear Flex Technology) arguably takes them to a whole other level, utilising a linear stringer made with a springy aerospace composite that provides all the strength of a central balsawood stringer whilst actually improving flex.

But that’s not the whole story… After relentless R&D they’ve perfected the density of the EPS foam they use as well arriving at ways of wrapping it with high-density skins that provide a protective shield whilst drastically improving the ‘flex lifespan’. So they’re less prone to dings and perform better for longer.

Another great thing about Firewire Surfboards is the variety of construction methods available to the consumer. What Firewire have thankfully realised is that the nuances of flex inherent in their various ‘tech’ suit different surfers and different waves. For example, surfers who like to constantly 'load' their surfboard with little pumps and quick turns (think Adriano De Souza) might prefer the springier, 'right-back-at-ya' characteristics of Rapidfire or LFT tech. Those that like to surf a little smoother meanwhile would probably get along better with FST or TimberTek.

The more springy LFT and Rapidfire techs might provide a welcome amount of response in small waves where quick changes of direction are the order of the day. But that same attribute could equate to unwelcome twitchiness when the waves get serious. Which is why FST or TimberTek is the preferred option in bigger waves.

But it doesn't matter how good the technology is if the shapes aren't up to scratch. And Firewire Surfboards' shapes most definitely are, in terms of quality and quantity. In-house shapers Nev Hyman and Dan Mann are right up there with the best, but Firewire have been clever enough to recognise that even with the best will in the world two men alone can't please everyone. So Firewire have taken a slightly different approach, producing surfboards in collaboration with some of the worlds best shapers to augment their own range. Luke Short (LSD), Matt 'Mayhem' Biolos (Lost), Daniel Thomson (Tomo) and John Pyzel (Pyzel Surfboards) have all helped Firewire develop a range that's up there with their construction methods in terms of innovation. (i.e. blazing a trail!)

For the growing fraternity of forward thinking surfers that have tried one and never looked back, the combination of performance, innovation, price, durability and environmental friendliness makes choosing Firewire Surboards a no-brainer.
